Town Basohli-a tehsil headquarter of district Kathua is situated on the right bank of river Ravi, now the reservoir of Ranjit Sagar Dam and is surrounded by Siwalik hills dissected and riddled by number of seasonal brooks. Basohli was founded by Raja Bhupat Pal who got constructed forts and palace.For a long time, Basohli remained an independent state with its relation to the adjoining states. The rich cultural and religious heritage of Basohli reflects from the various old monuments like temples, caves, sacred and secular ponds. The state also remained popular for its other traditions like paintings (chittarkala) , astrology, classical and folk songs and dance. An independent school of painting was established in Basohli in 17th century on different Hindu mythological themes.
